Logo Design Tips
  • Keep it simple. Complex designs don't work well when the logo is used in small sizes.
  • Avoid thin lines. They'll be lost when you shrink the logo to fit on a business card or something else.
  • You can have a version made which uses color, but you must have a version in black and white.
  • The best logos, say some experts, direct the eye upward and to the right (like the Nike swoosh).
  • If you choose a descriptive symbol, make sure it's truly descriptive of your church. For instance, many churches incorporate a dove into their logo. That certainly has biblical connotations. But what exactly does it relate to in that particular church?
  • People prefer names and logos that have an obvious meaning.
  • Logos with too many parts, or which are intricate, are more difficult to remember and reproduce.
  • Avoid logos that directly allude to one aspect or ministry of your church. A new minister may come along with a different vision--a discipleship emphasis to replace the former missions emphasis. If your logo is designed around a specific emphasis or vision, the meaning may be lost when a new pastor arrives with a different emphasis or vision.
  • Your logo should avoid any negative implications. Obviously.
  • Make your logo unique. Be especially hesitant to use computer clipart. Your logo may use the same piece of religious clipart (a cross or Bible, for instance) which the pastor down the street used in last month's newsletter.
  • The logo should be durable, able to last a good 25 years. That means you should avoid the latest artistic fad (like woodcut drawings).
  • The logo should be versatile so you can use it in various ways--on stationery, the website, business cards, electronic slides, the church sign, T-shirt imprints, etc.
