You can only emphasize a few things on the homepage. If you try to emphasize everything, then nothing stands out. It will be important to emphasize the following:
- Your church name.
- Your church city and state.
- Service times.
- Where to find information about you (the "About Us" link).
- How to contact you (perhaps a "Contact" link on the navigation bar).
- A search box (at least for larger sites).
The most important elements should show "above the fold." That is, when people access your homepage, don't make them scroll down to see these elements. The navigation bar, for instance. Whether the navigation bar is horizontal or vertical, put it toward the top of the screen. Don't try to be clever or "different" by putting it at the bottom.
The term "above the fold" comes from the newspaper world; the most important news always goes above the fold down the middle of the paper.
Include a Contact (or "Contact Us") link that goes to all contact information about you--email, phone, mailing address, fax, directions.
