Search Bar
A small church site doesn't need a search box. But if you've got a lot of pages, you might want to grab some Google code so that people can search your site. Some tips for the search box:

  • Put the search button on the homepage. You can also include it on other pages, but at least put it on the homepage.
  • The most common place for the search box is in the upper right or upper left.
  • Make the box wide enough so that people can see and edit their search criteria--at least 25 characters. (Look at the Search box on the right.)
  • Don't bother with a Search label. Name the button "Search" or "Go," and let that serve as the label. (Again, see the Search box on the right.)
The Google Search Code
Google code will give people the option of searching just your site, or searching the entire web. Remove those options, and just have people search your site (if you can figure out which part of the code to omit). Most people have a Google search bar built into their browser, which searches the whole web. They don't need that function built into your website.

To obtain Google search code for your site:
  1. Go to Google.com, and click on the Business Solutions link.
  2. Click on the "Site Search" link.
  3. You'll need to create an account with Google. If you have a Gmail account, then you're all set.
  4. You'll need to fill out a form about your site.
Ultimately, you'll end up in your own Control Panel. There, a link at the top says "Code."  That page contains two boxes with html code:
  • Search box code. This creates the search box.
  • Search results code. You create a  page on your site (for instance, called searchresults.html) and paste this code onto that page.
This can be a bit intimidating if you're a novice with html code. Might want to find someone to help you. Then again, if you're designing a website, you're gonna have to learn about html sooner or later.
